Atolls are among the most fascinating structures in the ocean. Formed over tens of millions of years, they begin as underwater volcanoes and slowly transform into coral-ringed lagoons through a process of eruption, sinking, and reef growth.
This short video reveals the stages of atoll formation – from fringing reef to barrier reef to the final coral ring that surrounds a lagoon teeming with life.
