I think that the reintroduction of fire is one of the most critical actions that we can take in not only preserving native North American ecology but promoting native edible species. What a win-win!
You can read reports from the USDA and US Forest Service on fire adaptations of species like Amelanchier alnifolia (Serviceberry) and Prunus pumila (Sand Cherry). Fire creates an opportunity for these smaller trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants to get access to sunlight that taller trees would otherwise block.
Please check out the work that @NativeHabitatProject is doing and consider supporting them in their endeavors!
